Explosion!
All of the modeling, texturing, lighting, and design are by me. Concept inspired very, very loosely by the general aesthetic of Cyberpunk 2077, albeit a bit more clean. My main focus throughout this entire project was good edgeflow and quad-based topology. I don't think any pole has more than 5 edges and I only used them where necessary.
I began by sculpting the base of the body, which was something I'd never done for a hard-surface model. A happy little accident with the grab brush created this weird, ear-like swoop on the side of the car. I decided to refine that shape and turn it into some kind of airflow scoop. Once I had the basic shape pretty close to something I thought I could work with, I began to retopo the design and start the SubD workflow.
The trickiest part about this model was having no reference whatsoever (except for the rims), which was an intentional choice to see what my mind could come up with on the fly. The side scoop was easily the most challenging aspect of this design. Getting a shape that felt sleek and interesting without being *too* Hot Wheels took a little experimentation.
The environment was modeled and textured in a couple hours. I decided on a brutalist design with a touch of modern lighting to juxtapose the car's sleeky, shiny aesthetic.
The shot of the car on the street was aligned using fSpy. It was the first time I'd done that with one of my models and it was so fun (so it definitely won't be the last).
